ALBERTA WINTER PROVINCIAL DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Alberta 2016-17 Diving Championships were held December 16th, 17th and 18th in the Repsol Center in Calgary. There was a large turnout of Edmonton area divers, who competed in the Alberta Provincial Stream Championships and the Alberta National Stream Championships.
In the Provincial Stream Championships, the girls D, 11 and under age group 1 m was dominated by girls from the Edmonton Excel Diving, the Edmonton Springboard and Platform Diving Club and the Edmonton Kinsmen Diving Club.
- Isa Koop from EKDC won the gold medal with a score of 197.45 points.
- Makinley McLeod also from EKDC, took the silver medal with a score of 175.15.
- Zoe Zelyk from Excel won the bronze medal with a score of 156.70.
- Jorja Andreson from EKDC, was fourth with a score of 153.20. Kaede Anderson from ESP was fifth with a score of 150.05 points.
In the girls D 3 meter event newcomer from gymnastics, Delaney Crowe from EKDC was the winner with 201.70 points.
- Makinley McLeod won the silver medal with a score 191.55 points.
- Kaede Anderson took home the bronze medal with 167.60 points.
In the D girls, platform event, Syla Celeste from EKDC had a strong performance winning the gold medal with 159.90 points.
- Allie Forbes also from EKDC won the silver medal with a score of 130.30 points.
- Isa Koop was the bronze medal winner with 108.40 points.
- Luisa Arco-Fragoeiro from Excel placed fourth with a score of 96.50 points.
- Makinley MacLeod was fifth with 84.00 points.
In the boys D, 1 m event, Ethan Beauvais from Excel took the silver medal with 167.35 points.
- William Gunderson from ESP, was third with 125.65 points.
In the boys D, 3 m event Ethan Beauvais won the gold medal with a score of 188.00.
In the boys D, platform competition Paul Yang from EKDC won the event with 106.50 points.
In the girls C, 3 m Championship Audrey Wehner from EKDC, had a very impressive event scoring an average of 8.5 on her forward two and one half somersault. Her winning score was 278.35 points.
- Alyssa Mahon from the same team placed second with a score of 216.00 points.
In the girls C platform Alyssa won the gold medal with a score of 141.40 points.
As can be seen the Edmonton contingent of divers brought home a significant haul of Provincial Championship medals.
In the Alberta National Stream Provincial Championships, there were some excellent performances starting with the E nine and under girls 1 m championship.
- Zoe Zelyk from Excel won the gold medal with a substantial score of 222.30 points.
- Aylah Angeles also from Excel won the silver medal with 208.80 points.
- Anika Smith from ESP took the bronze medal with 202.50 points.
- Elizabeth McGillivray from ESP was fourth with 199.80 points.
- Aidyn Pankiw-Brennan from Excel was fifth with 189.00 points.
- Anna McGillivray from ESP placed sixth with a score of 154.80 points.
- Elizabeth and Anna are former gymnasts and have only been training for a few months.
In the girls E, 3 m event Zoe and Aylah again battled for the gold with Aylah persevering with some high judges scores to win the event with a score of 232.75 points.
- Zoe won the silver medal with a score of 226.10 points.
- Anika Smith took the bronze with 210.90 points.
- Elizabeth McGillivray was fourth with 207.10 points less than three points ahead of her twin sister Anna who scored 204.25 points.
- Aidyn was sixth with a score of 156.75 points.
In the girls E, platform Championship, Aylah won the gold medal with 150.65 points.
- Anika Smith was second with a score of 124.50 points.
- Kaede Anderson won the bronze medal with a score of 122.50 points.
In the boys E, 1 m championship William Gunderson from ESP won the gold medal with 202.50 points.
In the boys E, 3 m event William Gunderson won the gold medal with 197.60 points. These were William's best events of the season.
In the girls D, 1 m championship Renee Batella from EKDC won the gold with substantial score of 251.95 points. Syla Celeste won the silver medal with a score of 210.40 points which exceeded the standard required to be able to compete at the National Championships.
- Luisa was third with a score of 194.45 points.
- Allie Forbes from EKDC was fourth with 182.65 points.
In the girls D, 3 m event Renée won the gold medal with an impressive score of 268.10 points. Isa Koop, from EKDC as well, won the silver medal with 237.95 points while diving up a year from her age group of 9 and under.
- Syla won the bronze medal with 202.85 points.
- Luisa was fourth with a score of 195.75 points.
- Allie placed fifth with a score of 185.10 points.
In the girls D, platform championship, Renée won the gold medal with 233.40 points resulting in her making her National Standard in all three of her events.
- Syla was second with a score of 158.60 points.
In the boys D, 1 m event Paul Yang from EKDC won the gold medal with 222.20 points.
In the boys D, 3 m event Paul won the gold medal again with 261.60 points. Both of Paul's scores exceeded the National Standard.
The longest event was the girls C, 1 m Championship with Calgary's National Champion Tatania Conn winning with a score of 334.30 points.
- EKDC's Michelle McLeod was second with a score of 284.45 points.
- Chloe Gray from EKDC was fourth with a score of 250.85 points making her first standard to go to the National Championships.
- Audrey Wehner from EKDC was fifth with 237.80 points.
- Isobella Dukart was just 2/10 of a point behind Audrey for sixth place.
- Delaney Crowe from ESP was seventh with 212.45 points.
- Kaleigha Michel from EKDC was eighth with 207.45 points.
- Alyssa Mahon from EKDC was ninth with 196.25 points.
In the girls C, 3 m Championship, Tatiana won the gold medal with a score of 362.05 points.
- Michelle McLeod from EKDC was second with 293.55 points.
- Audrey was fourth with 274.20 points.
- Both Audrey and Michelle made their National Standards.
- Isobella was fifth with 247.55 points.
- Kaleigha was sixth with 217.15 points.
The girls C, Platform was won by Tatania with a score of 285.00 points.
- Michelle was second with 232.55 points bringing her total to all three events exceeding the qualifying score to go to the National Championships. This has to be done one more time on each board in order to fully qualify for Nationals.
- Isobella won the bronze medal with a score of 213.00 points.
- Kaleigha was fourth with 206.20 points
In the girls B, 1 m competition Brooklyn Whyte from EKDC, won the silver medal with a score of 348.90 points.Ellie Keim also from EKDC, won the bronze medal with 340.95 points.
In the girls B, 3 m championship Brooklyn won the silver medal with 385.85 points. Ellie won the bronze medal with 323.95 points. Exceeding her National Standards on both springboards.
In the girls B, Platform Championship it was a very close battle up to the last dive between Margo Erlam and Brooklyn where on their last dive Margo edged out Brooklyn for the win. Margo's score was 327.95 points Brooklyn's score was 323.50 points which qualified Brooklyn on all three boards.
In the girls A, 1 m Championship Ashley McCool from Calgary won the gold medal with 431.55 points.
- Tanya Boychuk from ESP was second with 420.30 points.
- Martine Erlam from Calgary won the bronze medal with 381.65 points.
- Angela Unsworth from ESP was fourth with 349.55 points.
In the girls A, 3 m competition Martine was first with 447.15 points.
- Ashley was second with 439.85 points.
- Tanya was just a point behind with a score of 438.70 points. Tanya exceeded the national standard on both springboards.
- Angela placed fourth with 386.20 points.
In the boys A, 1 m championship Carlo Lopez from EKDC won the gold medal with 413.75 points. Carlo then went on to win the gold medal in the 3 m event with a score of 489.85 points. Then Carlo won the gold medal on the platform with a score of 385.55 points. Carlo exceeded the national standard on all three boards.
In the men's open 1 m competition Carlo won the gold medal with 271.25 points. In the men's open 3 m competition Carlo won the gold medal with a score of 315.70 points. This brought Carlos medal total to five Gold Medals.
In the women's open 1 m championship Ashley McCool was first with 265.55 points.
- Tanya Boychuk was second with 260.80 points.
- Margo Erlam won the bronze medal with a score of 233.40 points.
- Martine was fourth, less than two points behind her sister with a score of 232.05.
- Tatiana Conn was fifth with a score of 222.40 points.
- Brooklyn Whyte was six with a score of 206.50 points.
- Ellie Keim was seventh with a score of 181.70 points.
- Angela Unsworth was eighth with 168.00 points.
- Isobella Dukart was ninth with a score of 148.70 points.
In the women's open 3 m competition Ashley won the gold medal with 284.00.
- Margo won the silver medal with 278.85.
- Martine won the bronze with 255.85.
- Tatiana was fourth with a score of 249.00.
- Tanya was fifth with 231.60.
- Brooklyn was six with 229.00.
- Angela was seventh with 209.95.
- Ellie was eight with a score of 191.60.
The girls A and open events were very competitive and at a very high level for this early in the season.
After a good holiday training camp divers will be preparing for competing in Winnipeg or Victoria to further qualify for Nationals or international competitions.

THE ANNUAL SLEIGH BELL NOVICE DIVING COMPETITION
The Sleigh Bell Meet was held December 10th and 11th at the Kinsmen Sport Center Diving Pool. Divers representing the Edmonton Area clubs and divers from as far away as Lethbridge came to enjoy the friendly competitions. We are very pleased at seeing a great number of new younger divers showing excellent promise.
Among the youngest competitors in the meet were : six year old Brooklyn Middlestat with Excell Diving who placed second in the 7 and under 1 m event with a score of 114.15. Seven year-old Piper Evans from Edmonton Springboard and Platform Diving Club won the competition with a score of 120.65.
In the girls eight and nine age group 3 m event, Aylah Angeles from Excell Diving placed first, with a score of 138.20 points with some very high judges scores.
- Anika Smith from ESP had a strong event and placed second, with a score of 129.10.
- Aidyn Pankiw-Brennan from Excell was third, scoring 119.20 points.
- Elizabeth MacGillivray from ESP, placed fourth with 112.60 points.
- Anna MacGillivray followed with 102.95.
- Martine Ayery with Excell was sixth scoring 100.60.
- Allesandra Middlestat also from Excell finished seventh with 99.90points.
In the same age group in the 1 m competition there was a close battle for the win, with Aidyn Pankiw- Brennan from Excell winning the event with 174.35 points.
- Aylah Angeles from the same club was second, with a score of 171.95, just a 2 1/2 points spread between these two girls.
- Anika Smith from ESP took third, with a score of 160.90.
- Anna MacGillivary from ESP was fourth with a score of 151.55.
- Allesandra Middlestat from Excell was fifth with a score of 149.50.
- Elizabeth MacGillivray was sixth less than three points behind her twin sister with a score of 148.65.
- Martíne Ayery from Excel Diving was seventh with a score of 140.40.
As can be seen the close competition indicates substantial depth in the talent pool of the Edmonton diving clubs.
In the girls D1 meter, 10 and 11-year age group, Luisa Arco-Fragoeiro from Excell won the competition, with a very convincing score of 191.60 points with high difficulty dives.
- Makinley McCleod from the Edmonton Kinsmen Diving Club was second with 172.80 points.
- Zoe Zelyk from Excell was third, with 160.50 points.
- Allie Forbes from EKDC was fourth with 161.25 points.
- Kaede Anderson from ESP was fifth with 155.25 points
All of these divers competed very well.
In the 3 m competition with all of the same divers, Makinley came back to win, with a score of 161.10 points over Luisa who scored 155.15 points and Zoe who scored an almost identical total of 155.05 points. Kaede and Allie also almost tied with 137.25 and 137.20 points placing 4th and 5th.
In the girls C 12 and 13 age group 1 m event, Sara Scaber from EKDC, won, with a very high score of 222.60 points., Dela Crowe from ESP, a recent convert from gymnastics had an excellent competition placing second, with a score of 197.70 points.
- Alyssa Mahon from EKDC was a close third with 191.40 points.
- Briana Houde with ESP placed fourth with 172.50 points.
On the 3 m event Sara won her second event, with a score of 183.95 points.
- Dela was second again with 159.70 points
- Alyssa was third again, with 153.05 points.
In the women's B 14 and 15 year old category 1 m Amanda McKechnie from EKDC won with 252.30 points. Samia Davidson from ESP was second, with a score of 208.45 points.
- Logan Ramage also from ESP finished third, with 176.55 points.
In the girls B 3 meter event Amanda McKechnie also won this event, with a score of 167.55 points using a forward 1 1/2 somersault with one twist.
In the boys E, nine and under age group 1 m event Reese Whillier from ESP won this competition, by 1/10 of a point over his teammate, Nicolas Belony with scores of 151.35 versus 151.25.
Nicholas went on to win the 3 m event with a score of 110.80 points.
In the boys D 10 and 11 age group 1 m, event, Joshua McCutcheon from Lethbridge placed first with 145.30 points. ESP's William Gunderson took second with a score of 139.40.
In the boys D 3 meter competition, Paul Yang from EKDC won, with 176.55 points.
- Ethan Beauvais from Excell was second, with a 161.75 points.
- Joshua was third, with 128.65 points.
- William placed fourth with 118.60 points.
In the boys C 12 and 13 age group 1m event, Dominic Pittard from ESP won the event, with 180.65 points. Dominic performed a very good forward single somersault with one twist.
The results of this competition bode well for future champions at the higher category competitions.
